Ian Gray is a Canadian painter whose work is shaped by light, atmosphere, and firsthand experience of place. Raised on a farm near Indian Head, Saskatchewan, the vast prairie skies instilled an early fascination with scale, weather, and shifting illumination—elements that continue to define his work today. Painting is part of a living family tradition, reinforced through an ongoing exchange of work and critique with his two sisters.
Following a successful business career, Gray and his wife, Christine, now travel extensively, with Mexico—particularly Puerto Vallarta—playing an important role in his current practice. Gray paints exclusively from direct observation, working en plein air or from photographs he personally captures. This approach grounds his work in real locations, emphasizing authenticity over invention.
His paintings focus on skies, landscapes, seascapes, and birds, unified by strong value structure and atmospheric light. Gray approaches painting as interpretation rather than transcription, using compositional design to strengthen what is observed rather than simply record it.
He is an Exhibitor Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and a member of Artists for Conservation. His work has been selected for Art Comp 2024 and 2025 and featured in Artist Network’s Acrylic Works 12, recognizing him among the top 100 acrylic painters of 2025. This is his first solo exhibition in Puerto Vallarta.
